The Affordable Care Act requires all U.S. citizens and resident aliens to have medical coverage, or pay a penalty. To make coverage available to everyone, the government has created a Health Insurance Marketplace that will operate on a state-by-state basis. For information on the Marketplace, see the Marketplace Exchange Notice and visit www.healthcare.gov

Life Events
If you experience a qualifying life event, you must submit a request to change benefits coverage to SPE Benefits Connection with 31 days of the qualifying life event date.
  • Qualifying Life Events

Consistent with IRS rules, you may make changes outside of the annual Open Enrollment period only if you have a change of status or qualifying life event. Changes to benefits must be consistent with your status change. For example, if you get married, you can add your spouse to your medical plan, but you cannot change the plan you elected. Otherwise any changes to coverage must wait until the next year's Open Enrollment. If you have questions, call SPE Benefits Center at 1-833-976-6901, or click here to update your benefits coverage.

These events may include the following:

    • Marriage, declaration of domestic partnership; or
    • Legal separation, divorce or termination of domestic partnership; or
    • Adoption, gaining legal custody of a child; or
    • Child loses eligibility for coverage; or
    • Eligible employee or their eligible dependent loses other medical coverage.
  • Dependent Eligibility Audit

Social Security Numbers (SSN) are required by the Affordable Care Act for all dependents covered by an SPE medical plan in order for SPE to properly report coverage. Review and update dependent(s) SSN by calling 1-833-976-6901 or click here to update your benefits coverage.
